As a gardener for over 25 years and a professional garden writer and speaker for more than a decade it takes a lot to grab my attention, especially when it comes to garden blogs. These days blogs come and go faster than a Kardashian marriage so I am careful when it comes to lending my support and my reputation to someone. In just a few short months, Carol and UrbanFig have set a high standard for bringing fresh and relevant information to the urban gardening community and to those trying to learn how to garden for the first time.
I am very happy to be a part of the UrbanFig family and look forward to being a part of a growing dialogue. As author of the book “I Garden: Urban Style” I guess you could say I wrote the book on urban gardening (if you don’t laugh, the jokes get worse.) and I’m ready to share what I know as a contributor here at UrbanFig. I have started community gardens across the country and spoken at events with such noted names as Robyn O’Brien and Barry Estabrook.
My passion is for education, especially when it comes to our younger generations. It breaks my heart to live in a society that teaches our children that macaroni & cheese is a vegetable and the only tomatoes they’ll eat are in the form of ketchup or spaghetti sauce. I work hard to bring the joy and wonder of gardening to the kids around me with the hope that they might be as captivated as I was at their ages.
You are welcome to email me at michael@urbanfig.com any time with questions, comments or concerns. I look forward to talking with you all!

Congrats on the new relationship. Even though I live waaaaaay out in the boonies, I find that many aspects of urban gardening can be applied to country gardening too. Best wishes in your new endevours!
