One of the main reasons I started UrbanFig is that I’m a foodie, hands down. And what exactly does that mean? It means I care how food tastes, the source of the ingredients and if it’s fresh. Foods laced with chemicals and pesticides is not part of my foodie vision. I despise what has happened to our food system and to me, there’s no better way to control your own food than to grow it.
But growing everything isn’t always realistic or possible, thus we need to be informed about our food system as it exists in its current state. I’ve found some really good articles written about our food system and the labeling process.
Leslie Land of the Daily Green wrote a thorough guide explaining organic labeling. The main takeaway? There are flaws in our USDA organic label, so look for the additional OMRI label which has more stringent standards.
And then there’s the issue of nutrition. If you want to dive deeper and understand more about how our food labeling works and the politics behind it, check out Kristin Wartman’s article about nutrition and labels.
Lastly, there are some major proposed changes to government’s way of testing food for safety. Colleen Vanderlinden discusses the proposed changes for 2013 and how it may affect our food.
Bottom line, growing your own food is a wonderful choice for yourself, your community and the earth.
